Saga of Tanya the Evil Volume 1
The one thing I believe is most important to share is the title of the light novel. "The Saga of Tanya the Evil" is known as "Youjo Senki" in japanese, with the official translation per MAL being "The Military Chronicles of a Little Girl". I believe that the title more aptly fits the tone of the light novel. The book is not overly concerned with Tanya being some war hero, she is effectively the POV character that we view the war through in abstract. The Anime and Manga adapt the source material in unique ways that do not represent original aside from the general events. If you are here to see either the Manga or Anime in its original form, you need to understand that they are tonaly different. The difference in tone does not make any of the forms massively better or worse, just different.
I give Volume 1: Deus Lo Vult, a comparative 70/100. My opinions of the series will likely change as I get more engaged in it, I remember watching the Anime about a decade ago when it released but my memory of it is a bit fuzzy, but I do remember that I didn't particularly like it. Personally I found the novel 'whelming' where it felt like it neared the edge of incomprehensibility but it never truly did reach that point. Certain parts [Ch0], [Early Ch1], [Early Ch3] have this feel where you're kinda just watching something that supposedly interesting happening but it doesn't actually FEEL interesting, if you know what I mean. Although that may be my own lack of understanding kicking in, so I'll look back at this after the next volume or two.
My interest climbed over the entire novel, to the point where I completed the second half in a single sitting. I love the political discussion alongside the slice-of-life of it all in Chapters 4 and 5. I found the Tanya's 'interesting' form of obstruction to recruitment to be funny. Out of all of the stuff I've been reading its one of the few that got me to actually audibly laugh. I think if they can successfully keep this type of split of action and intrigue up, I'll probably love the series.
Annoying this novel has one of those weird communities, primarily due to the anime fan's lack of media literacy. Discussions on Tanya are specifically poisoned because people fail to realize the Tanya is not meant to be a "peak human" being, instead she is the imbodiment of ruthless realism, a lack of idealist thought. But unfortunately the Nazi and Ruthless Capitalists of the world are fans of the work despite the work not really supporting either.
